Mahoning Presbyterian Church, Danville PA - Presentation 2004

Following the fundraising concert in May 2004 at St. Augustine's Church, Penarth (see story below), Philip Davies, President of the National Welsh American Foundation presented a cheque for the sum of $750.00 to the Rev. Judson Bennett toward the restoration of the Mahoning Presbyterian Church in Danville, Pennsylvania. The presentation took place during the Joseph Parry Concert on May 21, 2005 - Joseph Parry's birthday. The concert was organized and funded by the Susquehanna Welsh Society and underwritten by local benefactors.

The Celentano String Quartet gave the U.S. first known complete performance of Parry's String Quartet as part of the celebration. NWAF Treasurer/Secretary, Dulais Rhys, compered the evening's entertainment and performed several organ pieces by Joseph Parry, written in Danville in 1864.

Trefor Williams from Wisconsin (formerly of Trefor, Gwynedd, Wales) sang six Parry songs as well as conducting the following day's Third Annual Jospeh Parry Gymanfa Ganu, with Dulais Rhys at the organ upon which Parry played over 100 years ago.

St. Augustine's Church, Penarth (Cymraeg)

In May 2004, the NWAF in Wales held a fund raising event for two of the churches with which Dr. Joseph Parry was involved during his lifetime. The proceeds from the evening were shared by St. Augustine's Church, Penarth where he is buried; and Mahoning Church, Danville PA, where Dr. Parry was the organist during his time in the United States.

The cheque for St. Augustine's was presented by Paul Loveluck, Chairman of the NWAF Board of Directors, to the Rector of St. Augustine's, Father Robert Donkin.

The fund raising event included a lecture on Dr. Parry's life and music by Dulais Rhys, the recognised international authority on the 19th Century Welsh-American composer. Church organist and music director, Robert Court, and his St. Augustine Singers contributed to the evening with a recital of Parry's music, including the European premiere of an organ piece composed in Danville in 1864.

The donation to Mahoning Church will be presented at the Annual Joseph Parry Memorial Cymanfa Ganu in Danville on 22 May 2005. Trefor Williams will be conducting and Dulais Rhys will be the organist, playing the same organ played by Dr Parry.
